Well known for her portrayal as Isha Price alongside Will’s Smith’s character [Richard Williams] in the 2021 film King Richard. Daniele Lawson’s phenomenal rise at such a young age has credited her with roles in hit shows ranging from CSI: Cyber, Young Sheldon, Mixed-Ish, to Good Trouble. Based on the true story that would go onto inspire the world, King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising his daughters to be extraordinarily gifted athletes [Venus & Serena Williams].
Daniele explains how when she initially got the audition for the role of Isha Price, she immediately googled her. “I wanted to be really familiar with the Williams family. I had grown up watching Venus and Serena, but I was shocked to find out about their older sisters.” She goes onto explain how when researching, she learned that Isha played a pivotal part in the success of her sisters. In addition to having the extraordinary opportunity to sit down with the Williams family and learn how close the whole family was and how everyone played their part.
For the young actor, collaborating with Will Smith was a life changing experience. She highlights how every day he made coming to set an incredibly positive and fun experience. “Mr. Will was always giving notes and taught us to be very selective with the projects we choose. His biggest advice was “Choose the projects that are significant to us and that will impact people.” She goes onto to point out how working with such incredibly experienced and talented individuals [inc. Aunjanue Ellis] has had a profound impact on defining herself as an actor.
Daniele explains that she loves being able to meet new people and take on different roles [in reference to her acting career]. Humbly admitting that she is incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented group of actors. Many of whom she has admired her entire life!
For Daniele, acting has always been a way for her to express herself as far as she can see. She explains how she started testing the waters through theatre at the age of 8 years. Recalling how every summer, she would attend a performing arts camp called Impact. A camp where the actor started to hone her craft ranging from acting and singing through to dancing.
The actor no longer finds herself getting nervous whilst filming. With a strong reference to the impact her parents have played in getting her to where she is today. She highlights how through their tenacity and unwavering support; this has enabled the actor to retain a steady head and keep herself connected with her roots.
Daniele’s dream role is to be part of a series that has a profound impact on people all over the world. With dream co-stars including Michael B Jordan, Zendaya or Marsai Martin.
Her advice is to always keep going. No matter how hard it may get, to press through and have belief in yourself. That you can do anything you put your mind to. Whilst remembering to enjoy the ride and be true to yourself! #Watchthisspace
