About the role


This role centers around understanding the drivers to Airtime Margin, having an interest in understanding the end to end accounting process and engaging with the business to understand the financial impact of commercial initiatives.  Airtime is the largest contributor of margin to the Tesco Mobile business and this role will be high profile, with the ability to make an impact with the commercial teams. Due to Tesco Mobiles organisational size, the role will enable you to understand strategic direction of the business and aid stakeholders in making informed decisions that are good for our customers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring and enhancing the integrity of reporting relied upon for accounting entries and owning/operating key controls whilst overseeing the end-to-end airtime-revenue accounting processes, including subscription revenues, out of bundle calls, SMS and data; roaming and interconnect and related costs.
  • IFRS 15 accounting, working closely with the Commercial Finance team to assess the impact of new propositions and changes, whilst maintaining SSPs for airtime products and handsets and analysing the impact of revenue allocations to assure accurate revenue reporting.
  • Working closely with the Data and Insight team, Finance Operations team and Commercial Finance and building relationships with VMO2 as Tesco Mobile’s network provider.
  • Reporting on all aspects of airtime revenue and costs, debtors and bad debt, providing management information, communicating the results and interpretation of variances and trends, financial accounting and statutory disclosures.
  • Lead on VAT implications of airtime activities including accounting for bad debt, roaming and zero-rated/exempt transactions, and assisting partial exemption accounting.
  • The role holder will seek to optimise process efficiency whilst upholding the highest levels of reporting integrity, championing automation, outsourcing and/or process re-design
  • This role will be a primary contact for the statutory auditors and will facilitate the planning and execution of audit activity across the airtime related activities of TM
  • Providing accurate forecasts and budgets on  Bad Debt to the planning and forecasting team.
  • Responsible for the reporting relationship with OFCOM including quarterly and ad-hoc submissions relating to airtime revenue.


What We Need from You:

Essential Skills:

  • Qualified Financial Accountant with post qualification experience in relevant roles
  • Excellent analytical skill – converting data into clear and engaging messages
  • Comfortable analysing large volumes of data and exploring exceptions, inconsistencies and mismatches
  • A keen eye for detail with the ability to spot trends, drivers, levers and use these to optimise performance
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset, curiosity and a desire to make continuous improvements
  • Strong awareness of relevant accounting standards and their practical application
  • Experience of handling large financial data sets and formulating journal entries
  • Previous exposure to accounting for revenues – within a Telco environment would be desired
  • Excellent communication skills, able to swiftly and succinctly pinpoint what is important from a dynamic, broad and deep pool of continuously evolving data 
  • Confident presenting complex and technical matters in a way that is simple, and easily understood by others that are not accounting experts
